A baby in a manger—what a little picture for such an immense person! Every Christmas we gaze in awe at a simple crèche and marvel at the miracle of the incarnation of the Son of God. Those tiny fingers belie the supreme power the person Himself not only possesses, but has already exercised. Even in His infancy Jesus embodied the fullness of the Godhead. The Son of God, “though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men” (Philippians 2:6–7 ESV).… Continue reading
As my wife and I were boarding our flight from Gatwick Airport in London my cell phone buzzed. It was not a good time to answer it and I knew if it were important, the call would be repeated when we landed in California. Sure enough, as soon as our plane touched down in Los Angeles I turned on my phone and the call came immediately. The news rocked me—my brother Jim had died at home in his sleep—suddenly and unexpectedly. Memories flooded my mind as I expressed to his wife my sorrow for his family.… Continue reading
- the Word provides the authority for ministry,
- the instruction for ministry,
- the power of ministry, and

Either Ms. Clinton or Mr. Trump will be the President of the United States of America. God sits on His throne over the universe. Many of us need to swallow that pill, sit on it, smoke a pipe over it, then tell the world. No President thwarts His throne, the return of Christ, or the New Heavens and Earth.… Continue reading
Talking about sex in this culture might appear to be edgy. Maybe we’re just trying to get more hits and go viral? But, sex is a problem. If you’ve counseled couples, then you know this is a serious issue with many problems. I have no desire to write this to be racy. Instead, due to the amount of problems surrounding this issue, this article is an attempt to help minister to people. When it comes to this discussion, it seems there are two popular approaches (that I’m aware of). They are on complete opposite ends of the spectrum.
First, I’ve seen ministries that refuse to talk about it, “If it’s a problem they’ll figure it out.” I’ve seen pastors pull books out of a bookstore “because no one here would struggle with it.” That’s not helpful because it is a problem among couples.… Continue reading
