The Sobering Urgency of Christian Love

1-corinthians-13One of the most frightening passages to me in all of the Bible is 1 Corinthians 13.  That’s right, the passage people love to read at weddings, the passage stamped on countless Hobby Lobby canvases, the chapter of love, gives me the chills.  It is a sobering passage, despite the sappy and sentimental ways it is often used.  And it has much to say to those involved in ministry at any level.

So what makes 1 Corinthians 13 such a sobering and urgent passage for those involved in any kind of ministry?

Thanksgiving, Pastor Style

Thanksgiving week is here, and that means many people across our nation will stop to reflect on the things they have to be thankful for. Some will do this out of obligation; others will realize just how much God has given them and sincerely seek to express their gratitude to him.

 

I realize that I have countless things to be thankful for. I know that there is no limit to the depth of what God has done for me. It only remains for me to consider and respond to them.

 

But I thought it would be appropriate for the season, helpful for my soul, and encouraging to the church I serve, if I could take a few minutes to consider the things I am particularly thankful for in one particular role: my pastoral oversight of the church I serve.

Every year I post this letter to high school Senior classes. I am excited about your next step in life. Congratulations on reaching this achievement!
