“Christmas is coming!” Children and adults alike express their excitement at this wonderful time of the year with all of its activities, decorations, goodies, and gifts. Far from the hearts and minds of most people at this time of year is yet another exclamation: “Christ is coming!” Yet, the believers living in those last few centuries before the First Advent of Jesus Christ did look forward and think, “The Messiah (Christ) is coming!”
“Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion, for behold, I come and I will dwell in your midst, declares the Lord.” (Zechariah 2:10 ESV)
Why did God become man? It’s a remarkable thing, isn’t it? And there is no more opportune time throughout the year than now to share with others the reasons for it.
In the Gospel of Luke, we read:
“Unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger” (Luke 2:11-12).
These well known words are the heavenly announcement of the Incarnation of the Son of God. Here in Luke 2, the angel is announcing the birth of Israel’s Savior-King. … Continue reading
One of the things my wife and I enjoy doing together is going to garage sales (call me an odd husband, but it’s true). There is something fun about walking through other people’s junk, seeing what they think it is worth and trying to get a good deal. Now, during this process, I always come across things in which I have no idea the item’s purpose. Even funnier is when I ask the seller and they don’t have a clue either.

Does your nativity scene remind you and those who visit your home that God sent a Savior to redeem us from our sins? Jesus did enter this world as a baby—just like the infant depicted in most manger scenes. However, the crèche does not display our Savior’s astounding résumé. Before the Spirit of God conceived His humanity within Mary’s womb, Jesus qualified uniquely to be our Lord and our Redeemer. As the Son of God He had already acted as the Logos (the Word) and the Light of the world.… Continue reading
I love Christmas music, although listening to the radio at this time of year can really drive one crazy. You’re probably no different than me, because if you hear one more pop starlet cover “Santa Baby,” or Paul McCartney sing “Wonderful Christmastime” or that hear that dreaded song “The Christmas Shoes,” you might convert from being a jolly person into being Ebenezer Scrooge. Now that those songs are in your head (sorry!), I want to do my best to get them out. Two years ago I created a Christmas playlist near the end of the season. It’s kind of a shame I did it so late, because people were tired of the songs on the radio and one more Christmas song was the last thing they wanted to hear.… Continue reading
