What We Ought To Be Thankful For

Green Gloop

My family’s “green goop”

Tomorrow is the holiday we call Thanksgiving. Families all over this country will gather around a large feast that typically includes turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, stuffing, sweet potato casserole with little marshmallows on top, and some pumpkin/pecan pie for dessert. You may have some other family tradition foods that you expect to be on the table, such as “green goop” was a family must at my family Thanksgiving meal (though everyone in my family thought it was gross except for my dad).

Many things happen on Thanksgiving that seem to be “traditions,” such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City, a Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys game, the end of the college football season, a “Turkey Football” game in folk’s backyards, preparation for “Black Friday,” Turkey Night Grand Prix for NASCAR racing, various marathons where people dress up as turkey’s and run a 5K or 10K, etc., etc.

One tradition I like that many families do it going around the table and each person saying what they are thankful for. Usually this means what one is thankful about concerning the past year, but it can usually turns into what they are thankful for in general. The list of things are endless about all the things we could be thankful for: friends, family, a home, daily food, and a nation that (so far) allows us to worship without fear. More superficial things to be thankful for could also be: our favorite type of entertainment (TV, video games, movies), clothes, a smartphone, or a current-winning sports team.

My question when thinking of all this is “What does God want me to be thankful for?” Does our great God and Savior give us anything in the Bible that we should be thankful for and be able to express when it is time?

Simply, yes. Firmly, yes!

“Always giving thanks for all things in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God” (Eph 5:20). “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father” (Col 3:17). “In everything give thanks; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus

I worked through the Scriptures and below have just quoted Scripture for your edification. So maybe when it is time to share what you are most thankful for, you will bust out one of these verses to share.Freedom_From_Want

For God’s Deliverance from godless people

2 Samuel 22:50-51, “Therefore I will give thanks to You, O Lord, among the nations, And I will sing praises to Your name. He is a tower of deliverance to His king, And shows lovingkindness to His anointed, To David and his descendants forever.”

Psalm 44:6-8, “For I will not trust in my bow, nor will my sword save me. But You have saved us from our adversaries, and You have put to shame those who hate us. In God we have boasted all day long, and we will give thanks to Your name forever.”

Psalm 54 (all), “1 Save me, O God, by Your name, and vindicate me by Your power. Hear my prayer, O God; give ear to the words of my mouth. For strangers have risen against me and violent men have sought my life; they have not set God before them. 4 Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the sustainer of my soul. He will recompense the evil to my foes; destroy them in Your faithfulness. Willingly I will sacrifice to You; I will give thanks to Your name, O Lord, for it is good. For He has delivered me from all trouble, and my eye has looked with satisfaction upon my enemies.”

When God accomplishes what seems to be the impossible

Ezra 3:10-11, “Now when the builders had laid the foundation of the temple of the Lord, the priests stood in their apparel with trumpets, and the Levites, the sons of Asaph, with cymbals, to praise the Lord according to the directions of King David of Israel. They sang, praising and giving thanks to the Lord, saying, “For He is good, for His lovingkindness is upon Israel forever.” And all the people shouted with a great shout when they praised the Lord because the foundation of the house of the Lord was laid.”

When completing what God has done

Neh 12:27, “Now at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought out the Levites from all their places, to bring them to Jerusalem so that they might celebrate the dedication with gladness, with hymns of thanksgiving and with songs to the accompaniment of cymbals, harps and lyres.”

When we have obeyed God

Psalm 26 (all), “3 For Your lovingkindness is before my eyes, And I have walked in Your thank you Lord in wood typetruth.I do not sit with deceitful men, nor will I go with pretenders. I hate the assembly of evildoers, And I will not sit with the wicked. I shall wash my hands in innocence, and I will go about Your altar, O Lord, That I may proclaim with the voice of thanksgiving And declare all Your wonders.

When God heals you from sickness

Psalm 30:2-4, “O Lord my God, I cried to You for help, and You healed me. O Lord, You have brought up my soul from Sheol; You have kept me alive, that I would not go down to the pit. Sing praise to the Lord, you His godly ones, and give thanks to His holy name.”

Luke 17:11-16, “While [Jesus] was on the way to Jerusalem, He was passing between Samaria and Galilee. As He entered a village, ten leprous men who stood at a distance met Him; and they raised their voices, saying, ‘Jesus, Master, have mercy on us!’ When He saw them, He said to them, ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests.’ And as they were going, they were cleansed. 15 Now one of them, when he saw that he had been healed, turned back, glorifying God with a loud voice, 16 and he fell on his face at His feet, giving thanks to Him. And he was a Samaritan.”

When we realize God is all we really need

Psalm 42 (all), “1 As the deer pants for the water brooks, So my soul pants for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God … Why are you in despair, O my soul? And why have you become disturbed within me? Hope in God, for I shall again praise Him for the help of His presence … The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime; And His song will be with me in the night, A prayer to the God of my life.”

When we get married

Psalm 45 (all), “I will cause Your name to be remembered in all generations; Therefore the peoples will give You thanks forever and ever.”

When we have an undivided heart and single loyalty to God

Psalm 86:11-12, “Teach me Your way, O Lord; I will walk in Your truth; unite my heart to fear Your name. I will give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart, and will glorify Your name forever.”

When God answers prayer

Pslam 118:21, “I shall give thanks to You, for You have answered me”

Musical instruments, so that we have music to praise Him

Psalm 147 & 150

When God gives us wisdom

Daniel 2:20-23, “20 Let the name of God be blessed forever and ever, for wisdom and power belong to Him … To You, O God of my fathers, I give thanks and praise, for You have given me wisdom.”

Before we eat (with Christians or non-Christians)

Matt 15:36, “[Jesus] took the seven loaves and the fish; and giving thanks, He broke them and started giving them to the disciples, and the disciples gave them to the people.”OLD MAN PRAYING

Acts 27:35-37, “Having said this, he took bread and gave thanks to God in the presence of all, and he broke it and began to eat. All of them were encouraged and they themselves also took food. All of us in the ship were two hundred and seventy-six persons.”

For the promised Emmanuel (God with us)

Luke 2:38, “At that very moment [Anna, the prophetess] came up [to baby Jesus] and began giving thanks to God, and continued to speak of Him to all those who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.”

When we remember Jesus’ Death for our Salvation

Luke 22:17-20, “And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine from now on until the kingdom of God comes.” And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.”

For Christian friends who stand up for us

Rom 16:3-4, “Prisca and Aquila, my fellow workers in Christ Jesus, who for my life risked their own necks, to whom not only do I give thanks, but also all the churches of the Gentiles”

When we get to share God’s truth

2 Corinthians 2:14-17, “But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place. For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things? For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.”

For the spreading of the gospel

2 Corinthians 4:15, “For all [sufferings] are for your sakes, so that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God.”

For the growth of other Christians

Ephesians 1:15-16, “For this reason I too, having heard of the faith in the Lord Jesus which exists among you and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease giving thanks for you, while making mention of you in my prayers.”

2 Thess 1:3 & 2:13, “1:3 We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater … 2:13 But we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit and faith in the truth.”
